Astypalaia is called “The Butterfly of the Aegean,” partly because of its peculiar shape and partly because of the beauty of the landscape. For those willing to travel off the beaten track, it’s love at first sight. At the southeastern edge of the Aegean, between the Dodecanese and the Cyclades, there is an island rich in imagery and emotions. Many stay forever devoted to this island of white light, with its crystal-clear water, sun-drenched beaches, historical heritage and hospitable residents. Chora, the island’s capital is built on the slopes on a hill, boasting a breathtaking view to the Aegean Sea. On the top of the hill overlooking the village, sits Querini castle, a vestige of the Venetian era. This castle used to protect the island during medieval times, but now it is the main attraction of Astypalea. As for Astypalea beaches, those that are close to Chora are organized with sunbeds and umbrellas, while along the beach you’ll find many taverns and Astypalea accommodation. A drive around Astypalea will get you to more secluded beaches, where you can relax and take a plunge in privacy.

BEACHES

Livadi is a coastal settlement located 2km southwest of Chora, the capital of Astypalea. The village lies in a fertile valley overlooking the beautiful bay. Livadi is an area with beautiful landscape and charming characteristics. The main beach is one of the few organized beaches in Astypalea with many secluded and quiet coves, crystalline waters and various watersports activities. The long stretch of virgin beaches set amidst rich natural surroundings makes it a wonderful spot for some good walking or hiking.

The beach of Agios Konstantinos is located 7 km south from Chora, the capital of Astypalea. The beach is actually a lovely, long and sandy cove with sparkling blue waters. The landscape around the beach is mountainous and rocky with a few scattered orchards that lend a wild and rugged beauty to the area.

Pera Gialos Beach is located within a short walking distance from Chora, the capital of Astypalea. The village used to be the island's main port. Today it still remains an important harbour from where boats depart for the nearby beaches and sites including Kaminakia and Vatses. Although close to the harbor, the waters of the beach of Pera Gialos are sparklingly clean and ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Cafes and taverns serving a rich variety of fresh sea food are close to the beach.
